As men age, their prostate gland naturally begins to grow or swell, this is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (or BPH for short). This age-associated prostate gland enlargement can disrupt urinary function leading to deteriorating urinary conditions and a reduced quality of life.

BPH related bladder symptoms are very common; The prevalence of this condition increases with age. Other factors that may increase the risk of BPH are race, environment, diet, and genetics.

Bladder symptoms associated with BPH are called lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These symptoms can be divided into two main groups – voiding symptoms and storage symptoms. Voiding symptoms are caused by the obstruction of the enlarged prostate. When this happens, the bladder can become overactive secondary to the obstruction and result in storage symptoms. Voiding dysfunction is a term used to describe poor coordination between the bladder muscle and the urethra. Voiding symptoms can be related to obstructive causes, and therefore symptoms such as urinary hesitancy, difficulty in emptying bladder or straining, and weak stream or urinary dribbling can occur. Storage symptoms are often irritate and can include urgency, frequent urination, frequent nighttime urination or involuntary loss of urine.
